West Open - Day 1
The West of Scotland Open was held at Gorbals Leisure Centre on Saturday 29th January and Sunday 30th January 2011. 148 competitors were in action over the two days. The event was supported by the Sports Council for Glasgow, Glasgow L.I.F.E.
Men’s Singles
Group 1 Ryan Jenkins took top spot with wins over Anthony Barella, Daniel Swiatek and Ian MacPherson. Daniel Swiatek was runner up. Group 2 Craig Howieson come out on top against Derek Lundie, Peter Shaw and Conor Edwards. Conor Edwards was runner up.
Group 3 Stewart Crawford won against Neil Doherty, Peter Aird and Ryan Owen. Ryan Owen was runner up. Group 4 Niall Cameron beat Stewart Armitage, Robbie McIntosh and Andy McFadyen. Stewart Armitage was runner up. Group 5 Stephen Jenkins beat Graeme Donnolly, Michael Schoenhofen and Gordon Muir, with Gordon being runner up. Group 6 Craig Hardie beat Brian Hunter, Robbie Fairley and Nathan Courtney. Nathan was runner up to Craig.
Group 7 Ashley Robinson (Ulster) beat Callum Gerrard, Steven Fowler and Craig Christie. Craig finished runner up. In Group 8 Gerry Campbell saw off the challenge of Andy Dunlop, Steven Gray and Tam Lawlor with Andy runner up. Group 9 Dan O’Connell (Wales) defeat Davie Thomas, Peter Cameron and Roy Coard. Peter finished runner up. Group 10 Sean Doherty beat Jack Cash and Willie Mabon, with Willie runner up. Group 11 was potentially one of the hardest groups; Scott Barton beat Richard Main, Colin Dalgleish and Ben Gregory. Richard was runner up.
Group 12 Chris Main beat Iain Rhind and Lewis Williams (Wales). Lewis was runner up. Group 13 Calum Main beat Ryan Flood (IRE), Neil MacDonald and Dariusz Szmczak, with Ryan runner up. Group 14 Gheorghe Durdun (Romania) beat Terry McLernon and Andy Grant to win group 14. Terry was runner up.
In round 1, Ryan Flood (IRE) beat Conor Edwards (WAL) 3-1. Sean Doherty beat Craig Christie 3-1, Craig Hardie beat Terry McLernon 3-0, Gerry Campbell beat Gordon Muir 3-0, Dan O’Connell (WAL) beat Lewis Williams (WAL) 3-1. Ryan Owen (WAL) had a great match with Scott Barton winning 3-2 in the match of the round. Gheorge Durdun accounted for Nathan Courtney 3-1. Chris Main beat Andy Dunlop 3-1. Stephen Jenkins beat Richard Main 3-1. Ashley Robinson beat Daniel Swiatek 3-0. Calum Main beat Stewart Armitage 3-0. Willie Mabon had a hard fought match against Peter Cameron winning 3-2.
At the last 16 stage, Ryan Jenkins (WAL) beat Ryan Flood (IRE), Sean Doherty scored a good win over Craig Hardie 3-1, Dan O’ Connell (WAL) beat Gerry Campbell 3-2, Niall Cameron battled away to beat beat Ryan Owen (WAL), Stewart Crawford ended Gheorge Durduns challenge winning 3-0, Stephen Jenkins accounted for Chris Main, winning 3-0. Calum Main scored a good win over Ashley Robinson (ULST) and Craig Howison beat Willie Mabon 3-0.
Quarter Finals saw Ryan Jenkins (WAL) beat Sean Doherty 3-1, Niall Cameron beat Dan O’Connell (WAL) 3-2, Stewart Crawford beat Stephen Jenkins (WAL) 3-2 and Craig Howieson saw off Calum Main’s challenge winning 3-0.
In the semi finals, Ryan Jenkins(WAL) took no chances against Niall Cameron winning 3-0 (11-8, 11-9, 11-8). Craig Howieson had to battle away to get the better of Stewart Crawford 3-1 (11-7, 11-13, 11-9, 12-10.
In the final, Ryan Jenkins won his seventh title in eight years, with a repeat of last years final against Craig Howieson winning 4-2 (11-9, 11-9, 6-11, 8-11, 11-5, 11-6).
Ladies Singles
Group 1 defending champion Naomi Owen (WAL) beat Linda McLernon, Catherine O’Neill and Megan Phillips (WAL), Megan was runner up. Group 2 Charlotte Cairey (WAL) beat Maureen Moran, Emily Standing (ENG) and Natasha Milliken. Natasha was runner up. Group 3 Angharad Phillips (WAL) beat Corinna Whitaker and Bethany Ross. Corinna was runner up. Group 4 Chloe Thomas beat Stephanie McCallum and Rhian Williams. Stephanie was runner up.
At the quarter finals stage, Naomi Owen beat Stephanie McCallum 3-0, Angharad Phillips beat Natasha Milliken 3-1, Corinna Whitaker beat Chloe Thomas 3-0 and Charlotte Cairey beat Megan Phillips 3-1.
Semi finals Naomi Owen beat Angharad Phillips 3-1 (11-7, 11-6, 11-9). Charlotte Cairey beat Corinna Whitaker 3-1 (11-8, 11-6, 11-13, 11-5).
In the final Naomi Owen was in top form to beat Charlotte Cairey 3-1 (11-3, 9-11, 11-7, 11-8).
Men’s Band 1
Group 1 Ashley Robinson (ULST) beat Ryan Owen (WAL), Stewart Armitage and Peter Cameron. Stewart was runner up. Richard Main won Group 2 beating Conor Edwards, Neil Doherty and Roy Coard. Conor was runner up. Group 3 Craig Christie upset the seeding beating Dariusz Szymcak, Dan O’Connell and Jack Cash. Dan was runner up. In Group 4 Chris Main beat Robbie Fairley, Alex Wheeler and Andy McFadyen. Alex was runner up. In Group 5 Calum Main beat William Kennedy, Chris Wheeler and Steven Gray. Chris was runner up. Last 16 saw Ashley Robinson beat Dan O’Connell 3-0, Connor Edwards beat Gheorge Durdum 3-2, Scott Barton beat Ryan Flood 3-1, Chris Main beat Christopher Wheeler 3-0, Craig Christie scored another good win against Stewart Armitage 3-2, Calum Main had a hard fought win over Nathan Courtney, winning 3-2. Lewis Williams beat Willie Mabon 3-1. Richard Main beat Colin Dalgleish 3-1.
Quarter final stage saw Ashley Robinson beat Conor Edwards 3-1, Chris Main beat Scott Barton 3-1, Craig Christie scored yet another good win beating Calum Main 3-0 and Richard Main beat Lewis Williams.
In the semi finals, Chris Main had to battle hard to get the better of Ashley Robinson, winning 3-2 (8-11, 6-11, 11-6, 11-7, 11-6). Richard Main ended Craig Christie’s good run winning 3-2 (7-11, 9-11, 11-8, 11-8, 11-4).
The final brought together the Main Brothers – Chris and Richard battle it out for the band 1 title. Chris Main ran out the winner winning 3-214-16, 11-8, 11-8, 3-11, 11-5.
Men’s Band 2
Group 1 Blair Fowler beat Duncan Smith, Jonathan Bisp (WAL)and Gordon Muir. Gordon was runner up. Group 2 was won by Jonny Gregory (WAL) beating Michael Schoenhofen, James Kennedy and Martin Oestmann. Michael was runner up. Neil McDonald won Group 3 beating Jordan McGinley, Ted Mahaffay (ULST) and Robbie McIntosh. Ted was runner up. Brian Hunter won Group 4 beating Andrew MacPherson, Eric Dalgleish and Andrew Grant. Andrew was runner up. Ross Grant won Group 5 beating Yaser Razouk, Thomas Grant and Kyle Adams. Yaser was runner up. Group 6 was won by Ian MacPherson beating Stefan Jeczalik (WAL) and Connor Moran, Connor was runner up. Group 7 was won by Charlie Ellis beating Graeme Donnolly, Neil Macdonald and Ben Gregory. Graeme was runner up. Group 8 was won by Nick Wolanski beating Gary McAlpine and Iain Rhind.
Last 16 saw Blair Fowler beat Iain Rhind, Ted Mahaffay beat Charlie Ellis, Connor Moran beat Ross Grant, Brian Hunter beat Michael Schoenhofen, Neil McDonald beat Graeme Donnolly, Ian MacPherson beat Yaser Razouk, Gordon Muir beat Nick Wolanski, Jonny Gregory beat Andrew Grant.
In the quarter finals, Blair Fowler scored a good 3-0 win against Ted Mahaffay, Brian Hunter beat Connor Moran 3-0, Ian MacPherson beat Neil McDonald 3-0, Gordon Muir beat Jonny Gregory 3-1.
In the semi Finals, Blair Fowler beat Brian Hunter 3-0 (11-0, 11-6, 11-8), Gordon Muir beat Ian MacPherson 3-0 (11-5, 11-8, 11-8)
In the final, which was a repeat of the earlier group match, Blair Fowler won the band 2 title winning 3-0 (11-8, 11-9, 12-10).
Ladies Band 1
Group 1 Charlotte Cairey ran out the winner with wins over Rhian Williams, Bethany Ross and Lucy Elliott. Rhian was runner up. Group 2 was won by Chloe Thomas, beating Linda McLernon, Angharad Phillips and Maureen Moran. Angharad was runner up. Megan Phillips won Group 3 beating Emily Standing, Stephanie McCallum and Maureen Moran. Emily was runner up.
In the preliminary round, Megan Phillips was a 3-0 winner against Rhian Williams (11-8, 11-7, 11-6). Angharad Phillips beat Emily Standing 3-0 (11-7, 11-6, 11-6)
In the semi finals, Charlotte Cairey ran out a 3-0 winner against Angharad Phillips (11-7, 12-10, 12-10). Chloe Thomas beat Megan Phillips 3-2 (9-11, 11-8, 8-11, 11-6, 11-7).
In the final Charlotte continued her good form to beat Chloe 3-0 (11-8, 11-9, 11-6).
Ladies Doubles
Congratulations to Chloe Thomas and Angharad Phillips (WAL) who beat Charlotte Cairey and Megan Phillips in the final 3-1 (16-14, 3-11, 12-10, 11-9). Chloe and Angharad had earlier accounted for Scottish Doubles champions Corinna Whitaker and Natasha Milliken in the semi finals 3-1 (11-5, 11-4, 10-12, 11-7)
Men’s Doubles
48 pairs of doubles were in action at the West Open and there were some fantastic matches. At the quarter finals stage, Howieson/Crawford beat Doherty/Doherty 3-0, Williams/O’Connell beat the established team of Chris and Richard Main 3-0. Calum Main and Scott Barton scored a good 3-1 win over Terry McLernon/Craig Hardie. Ryan Jenkins and Stephen were 3-0 winners over Armitage/Mabon.
At the semi final stage, Craig Howieson/Stewart Crawford were 3-0 winners over Dan O’Connell (WAL)/Lewis Williams (WAL) (11-4, 11-8, 11-8). Ryan Jenkins/Stephen Jenkins were 3-0 winners over the young team of Scott Barton/Calum Main (11-4, 11-3, 12-10).
In the final Ryan Jenkins/Stephen Jenkins were 3-1 winners over Craig Howieson/Stewart Crawford (11-4, 11-6, 10-12, 11-2).
Hard Bat Singles
27 entries were received for the hard bat competition, with people still trying to enter on the day. This event could prove to be popular in the future.
Terry McLernon Jnr. was a worthy winner of the event, beating Sean Doherty in the last 16, Neil Doherty in the quarter finals and Scott Barton in the semi finals.
Charlie Ellis reached the final with wins over Steph McCallum, Craig Hardie, Jonny Gregory, Alex Wheeler.
In the final, Terry beat Charlie 2-0 (13-11, 11-7)
Veterans Singles
There was a very strong entry in this event, with several veterans from Ulster taking part. Willie Mabon reached the final beating Catherine O’Neill, Tam Lawlor, Calum Gerrard and met Gerry Campbell who beat Neil Doherty, Roy Coard, Ian MacPherson.
This final was one of the best of the day with tremendous rallies. Willie raced to a 2-0 lead and had match point only for Gerry to make a remarkable comeback to win sets 3 and 4. In the final set, Willie played superbly to win 12-10.
Willie Mabon won 11-8, 11-9, 10-12, 3-11 12-10.
Disability Singles
Congratulations to John Whitelaw on winning matches against Connor Gordon, Martin Perry, Kevin McCormack, Euan McLaughlin. Kevin McCormack finished runner up, scoring a good win against Connor Gordon.
