Double ambitions in Cup Finals

Drumchapel E and the 44th BB had league and cup double ambitions on their minds as the Divisional League cup finals started at Drumchapel Sports Centre on Tuesday 28 April. These young teams recently secured the Division One and Two titles respectively and winning the cup would sign off a highly successful season.

Maxwell Wilson Cup (Division 1)

Drumchapel E lined up against Knightswood A. Scott Barton and Nathan Courtney got Drumchapel off to a bright start with wins against Neil Doherty and Ian Hay. Bill Davidson responded for Knightswood in the next match with a solid win against Philip McCallum. Knightswood then turned to the experience of Ian Hay to get back on level terms but the audacious play of Scott Barton put paid to that and he restored a two match gap between the teams. Phil and Scott increased this lead by winning the doubles and Nathan then withstood a spirited display from Bill Davidson to secure the cup and double win for Drumchapel.

House of Harris Cup (Division 2)

Pat “bomber” Burns set out Holy Cross High School’s stall with an impressive 3-1 over the BB’s Sam Murdoch providing a clear indication of the High School’s intention of spoiling any thoughts of a league and cup double party. That veteran party pooper Michael Schoenhofen then played some excellent table tennis to secure a 14-12 in the fifth win over the up and coming Adam Gaffney to give Holy Cross a two nil lead. Philip Houston then pulled one back for the BB with a 3-1 over Stevie Andrews and this was followed up with an excellent win for Sam over Michael. All square but the doubles then saw the Holy Cross side take the initiative again with a close 3-0 win (3 deuces) for Michael and Pat over Sam and Philip. Adam then restored parity for the BB with an efficient 3-0 victory over Stevie. Philip and Pat produced a great display of attacking table tennis in the next encounter with Pat edging home 11-9 in the fourth. Stevie and Michael then secured the cup for Holy Cross with a great win in the doubles over Adam and Sam.

Disappointment for the BB but a great final and a well deserved win for Holy Cross.
