National Table Tennis Championships 2012

Co-ordinated by Disability Sport Events (DSE)

 7-8 July 2012
Terry McLernon, ably and enthusiastically assisted by Connor Moran, accompanied six of Scotland’s finest disabled players to Warwick University, Indoor Tennis Centre, to compete in the above tournament - part of the Grand Prix Series. And what a successful weekend!
Martin Perry - Player of the Championship
No luck in the Class 7 singles, although his match with fellow Scot (and eventual class winner) Euan McLaughlin was an enthralling marathon. Beating Charles Sketchley (7,-8,6,-7,13) was also a great result.
The Player of the Championship Award goes to the competitor who, in the opinion of the EFDS & ETTA representatives has shown the most meritorious performance throughout the tournament. General attitude, commitment to the sport, determination, team spirit & sportsmanship are all taken into consideration. This is the second event in succession that Martin has won this award, and if ever a player reflected all of these attributes and  more - his spectacular falls, sense of humour and texting skills - that guy is Martin Perry!
Euan McLaughlin
Winner Class 6 singles (-3,-10,9,2,8)
Semi Finals Class 6-11 Doubles - with Neil Innes (-5,-3,-8)
A slow start in the singles final for Euan, but his renowned determination to be a winner paid dividends. All that mental & physical effort was still on show despite a marathon, energy draining earlier match against Martin (one game finished 20-18). In the semi-finals doubles match - with Neil Innes - they were outgunned by the eventual Championship winners Peter Cameron & Paul Waumsley.
Kevin McCormack
Quarter Finals Class 6-11 Band B Open Singles( 9,-9,-6,-8)
Quarter Finals Class 6-11 Doubles - with Conor Gordon (-13,-9,-11)
Kevin gave an excellent performance against a very good Gareth Jones, winning the first game in an exciting match that was lost over four ends. In the doubles with Conor, the pair met former World Champion Farrell Anthony & Gareth Jones (again!). It was a good, determined performance but they still lost in three ends.
Neil Innes
Semi Final Class 7 singles (-2,-6,-5)
Semi Final Class 6-11 Doubles - with Euan McLaughlin (-5,-3,-8)

After a good quarter final win in the Class 7 singles, Neil, despite his best efforts, had little chance against the eventual title winner Peter Cameron. And Neil - with Euan - after a solid and convincing quarter final win was unlucky to meet Peter again in the semi-final of the doubles - playing with Paul Wamsley. Neil and Euan gave a good account of themselves, but their opponents were simply too strong.
Conor Gordon
Winner Class 6-11 Band B Open Singles (4,-9,-6, 7, 3)
Semi Final Class 7 singles (9,4,-9,-5,-9)
Quarter Final Class 6-11 Doubles - with Kevin McCormack (-13,-9,-11)
A good win for Conor against old adversary Craig Allen - he had a small lapse in concentration mid match perhaps, but very comfortable in the end to win the Open Singles Title. In the Class 7 singles semi-final despite a great start, Billy Shilton proved too consistent, beating Conor over five games.
The quarter-final doubles match with partner Kevin was a difficult task - playing against former World Champion Farrell Anthony & Gareth Jones. A determined performance from the Scots but losing three closely contested sets to a very strong pair was a great effort.
Peter Cameron

Winner Class 7 singles (7,11,1)
Winner Class 6-11 Open Doubles (3,7,-8,-9,5)
Semi Final Class 6-11 Open Singles (6,7,-8,-4,-7)
Comfortable winner of the Class 7 singles final and an excellent doubles final win with partner Paul Waumsley, against Farrell Anthony and Gareth Jones. However, it could have been a triple final place for Peter but, despite being two games ahead of British Number 1 (Class 11) and eventual title winner Adam Thompson, the match was lost over the next three games.
On reflection, this was an impressive performance from the Scottish Disability Squad against the best of British.
