West Schools Qualifier

The West of Scotland Scottish schools qualification tournament took place at Holyrood Sports Centre on Saturday, 7 February. With over 60 entries, competition was extremely fierce in the Boys’ Under 12, 14 and 16 age categories.

Under 12 Boys
 
Under 12 Boys - Yasser & RoryRory Boyd, Yasser Razouk, Mihir Date all won their preliminary group in impressive style and Greg Robertson came through a three player countback. In his first match in the final group Rory Boyd had to play well to beat Mihir Date, winning in four hard fought ends. This appeared to set him up for his next two matches which he won without dropping another set. Yasser secured second spot with good wins over Mihir and Greg.
 
Under 12 GirlsUnder 12 Girls - Citlan & Nadia
 
Not to be out done by her brother Sean, Nadia kept up the family tradition of winning trophies by beating Carla McNiven 3-0 and then, in a five end thriller, securing the win against Caitlin Cameron for the Under 12 girls title.
 
 
 
Under 14 Boys
 
Under 14 Boys - Adam & ScottAn impressive entry of 24 players produced an extremely competitive event. The top two seeds Scott Barton and Adam Gaffney both progressed to their final group without dropping a set. Duncan Smith also advanced to a play-off place in good style to meet Jonathan Diack, which Duncan won 3-1, 11-4 in the fourth end. The other play-off place brought together Craig McGregor and Connor Moran, which Greg won 3-0 to take his place in the final group of four.
 
In the final, Scott Barton secured 3-0 wins against Duncan and Craig and duly wrapped up the under 14 event, with a 3-1 victory over Adam. Duncan secured third spot with an 11-6 in the fifth win over Craig and Adam took the runners up spot with hard fought wins over Duncan and Craig.
 
Under 16 Boys
 
Three of the top four seeds, Sean Doherty, Daniel Swiatek, and BaselUnder 16 Boys - Sean Razouk, progressed to the final group without dropping a set. Callum Renton however, secured a good 3-1 win over fourth seed Philip Houston to earn a place in the top group.
 
Sean started the final group in fine form with a 3-0 win over Callum, followed by a 3-1 win against Basel. Daniel Swiatek put up some resistance to Sean’s all out attack but Sean was not to be denied and after three very close sets he secured the match 11-5 in the fourth. Daniel went on to win the runners up spot with a 3-1 win over Basel and a 3-0 win (including two deuce games) against Callum. Basel then won the deciding game in a five end thriller against Callum to secure third place.
 
Under 18 Boys
 
Under 18 Boys -  Nathan & SamA compact but quality field of four players gathered for this final age group. Top seed Nathan Courtney started in convincing style with a 3-1 win over the ever competitive Andy Grant. Sam Murdoch then matched this display with an impressive three straight win over Graeme Donnelly. Sam continued in a positive manner and found himself 2-1 up in games and nine all in the fourth game against Nathan who then produced two top class serves to restore parity. That game appeared to settle Nathan, who won the deciding end 11-7. He then followed this up with a 3-1 win over Graeme to win the group and the under 18 title. Sam then lost to Andy 3-1 and then Graeme beat Andy 12-10 in the fifth. Second spot went to a countback, with Sam coming out on top, followed by Andy.
