Scottish Open - Peter Cameron 31/03/2010 13:11:57
I asked Tam the other night " Is there a Scottish Open this year? "Naw" he said incredulously " there hasn't been one for 25 years". It just goes to show how out of touch I am. The best tournament in Scotland that attracted players from all over the world, what a pity it can't be revived.
I wonder if anyone knows how this came about, was it due to lack of cash, interest or a combination of these things?.
Would be delighted to hear from anyone that could explain why this tournament has dropped from the calendar.

I would like to agree with Philip McCallum's comments on the Archive section. This is a very positive step in maintaining records and one that all leagues and TTS should adopt.

However, I don't think that any handbook prior to c1970 will be of particular help in getting league positions and top ten averages. About that year I served on the West of Scotland handbook committee along with Duncan Hogg and Mike Docherty and it was only then that the handbook was redesigned to include this information.

Prior to then the Match Secretary, Gwilliam Brown of Glasgow Transport, produced an annual league review of epic proportions. Included was a review of each division, and there could have been ten of them, a final league table and an individual average for every player in each division. Added to that was a career average for all first (premier to you) division player.

All of this was done before the days of computers, or calculators for that matter, and printed off a Xerox machine. With apologies to all serving Match Secretaries, they don't make them like they used to.

At one point in time, probably about 1973, I did have quite a few of them but passed them on to someone but cannot remember who - such is old age!

Back to your website - very impressive! I've only one very small criticism - please include West Lothian Table Tennis Club within your links.

Hi everyone, just been looking through the archive section that Sinclair has built onto the website - fantastic!! Anyone who has old handbooks gathering dust please get in touch with Sinclair or Iain Rhind - they are particularly interested in anything pre 1970s.

Waldner & Personn at The Drum - Heavypowerlooper 25/06/2009 21:21:20
An amazing night . Seeing them walking down the back steps of the hall I still find hard to believe . The show was a fantastic exhibition of athletic skill .
There were so many smiling faces . I'm trying to be objective but honestly feel that , after a few days chewing on it , that must have been one of the most memorable nights in the history of Scottish table tennis . ( I know , I need to get out more - maybe cut down on the tablets ) .
Anyway many congratulations - to Terry and the club , the sponsors and the Golden Two .
PS - Was Big Ewan queing for Waldi's autograph or was it the other way round ?
